Full decompression to 45 metres

Tec 45 picks up where Tec 40 leaves off and takes you deeper. It is the second part of the PADI Tec Deep programme: you learn to plan and make single and repetitive decompression dives to 45 metres. Decompression time is no longer limited, and you use a single stage cylinder of EANx or 100% oxygen to speed up the decompression or make it more conservative.

The course also prepares you for foreseeable technical diving emergencies and how to respond to them.

What you learn

  • Decompression theory: decompression algorithms, optimising stops, how gases affect decompression.
  • Decompression gases: oxygen and EANx for decompression, MOD and CNS limits, how to avoid a wrong gas switch.
  • Gas planning: repetitive dives, team reserves, planning for the worst case.
  • Equipment: a full technical configuration (backmount or sidemount), a stage cylinder with a clearly marked regulator, decompression computers or tables.
  • Redundancy: backup regulators and computers, gas supply control, team gas sharing and reserve planning.

How the course runs

You start by reviewing Tec 40: you check your equipment yourself, without the instructor's help. In the water you work with a stage cylinder, switch gases precisely, keep to your decompression stops and adjust the profile in real time.

A lot of attention goes to emergencies during decompression: lost decompression gas, gas loss, a separated team and long decompression. The course focuses on safe gas switching and disciplined equipment handling during decompression.

After the course you can continue to Tec 50, the last part of the Tec Deep programme.

Frequently asked questions

How is Tec 45 different from Tec 40?

Tec 40 limits decompression to 10 minutes, depth to 40 m and deco gas to EANx50. Tec 45 lets you dive to 45 m with no limit on decompression time and use up to 100% oxygen for decompression.

Why do I need Rescue Diver?

PADI requires it for Tec 45: a technical diver must be able to help a buddy and give first aid. Your first aid and CPR training must be from the last 2 years.

How long does the course take?

4–5 days, including theory and four open-water dives. We agree the schedule with you.

What equipment do you provide?

We provide the course equipment, including a stage cylinder for the decompression gas.

Requirements

  • PADI Tec 40 Diver
  • PADI Rescue Diver or equivalent (first aid and CPR training within the last 2 years)
  • At least 50 logged dives, 10 of them deeper than 30 m
  • Medical form signed by a physician within the last 12 months
