Video tips

How to swim underwater without a mask

A diver in a recreational set-up takes off his mask, puts it on the bottom and swims without it. The tips on screen: control your breathing, open your eyes, control your buoyancy. Without a mask you see less well and everything is out of focus, but you can still orient yourself underwater and find the right direction. At the end the diver goes back to the mask, puts it on and clears it.

How to put on a spare mask underwater

Hovering above the bottom, a diver takes off his mask, takes out a spare one, puts it on and clears it, then swims on. Filmed while diving in Cyprus.

How to use an SMB as an emergency BCD

The text on screen: if your BCD is completely damaged, you can still control your buoyancy by using the SMB as an emergency buoyancy device. A diver in a recreational set-up and a wet suit, on the bottom, takes out a red SMB, unrolls it, puts some air into it and attaches it to his equipment. Held up by the SMB, he then rises and swims in midwater, goes back down to the bottom and rises again.

What to do if your mask strap breaks

Virginijus Mažuika shows masks and their straps, and a diver is filmed handling his mask underwater.

Butterfly weight system: how to fit it

Virginijus Mažuika shows a backplate and a wing in the shop. On the table he threads two weights onto a strap, then fixes the strap with the weights to the backplate under the wing. At the end the same system is shown on another set with an orange wing and two small cylinders.

LP hose burst: self-rescue ascent without a buddy

A self-rescue skill for an LP hose burst or a regulator free-flow when the diver is separated from the buddy, performed with a recreational equipment configuration and a dry suit. After a simulated LP hose burst, the diver reaches back to the cylinder valve and, controlling it by hand, makes a controlled ascent to the surface.

How to fit a mouthpiece without a cable tie

Virginijus Mažuika shows cable ties and bolt snaps whipped with cord in the shop. Then a whipping knot is tied step by step: first with white cord on a wooden stick, then with thin cord around the mouthpiece on a regulator second stage. The cord ends are cut off.

How to fit trim weights

Virginijus Mažuika shows small trim weights in the shop. On the table he threads a weight onto a short strap and ties it with cord, then fixes the weight to the cylinder band of an assembled BCD.

How to fix a pouch on the belt so it does not slide

Virginijus Mažuika shows a wing with a harness and some pouches in the shop. On the table he threads pouches onto a belt together with a metal buckle, then does the same on the waist belt of a harness so that the pouches stay in place.

How to choose a diving mask

Virginijus Mažuika shows various diving masks in the shop and holds them to his face, also with a snorkel in his mouth. He also shows a card of optical lenses for masks, a Sea Buff bottle, a toothbrush and a tissue, and at the end puts masks on with the strap.

How to tie a bolt snap to diving equipment

Virginijus Mažuika shows regulators, a pressure gauge and a reel with bolt snaps in the shop; one way of attaching is marked on screen as wrong. On the table he ties a bolt snap with thin cord to a regulator hose and to a dive light, shows the knot slowly with red and white cords, and at the end shows a regulator set with the bolt snaps tied on.

How to attach a bolt snap to a regulator

Virginijus Mažuika shows regulators with bolt snaps on their hoses and, wearing a harness, shows how they are clipped on, also with a glove. At the end he shows a bolt snap fixed to the hose next to the second stage.

How a diving depth gauge works

A lecture at a whiteboard: the presenter shows a depth gauge and a gauge console and writes formulas, with pictures of depth gauges and a Bourdon tube diagram shown in between.

How to buy used diving equipment

Virginijus Mažuika talks about buying used equipment in the shop: he shows a small cylinder with the markings on its shoulder and its stickers, a regulator, documents and a dry suit, showing its neck, chest valve and shoulders close up.

How not to lose your diving mask

Divers filmed in a lake: a mask on the bottom, divers at the surface with their masks pushed up onto the forehead (marked in red on screen), and a mask sinking to the bottom. Then divers are shown putting their masks on at the surface.

How to fix a BCD to the cylinder

Virginijus Mažuika shows a BCD and its cylinder band in the shop. He puts the BCD on the cylinder, wraps the band around the cylinder, threads it through the buckle, tightens it and closes it. He then shows a band with a metal cam buckle on another BCD and a separate band with a plastic buckle, threading it in his hands. At the end the cylinder is shown held by two bands.

Which diving fins to choose

At the shop counter Virginijus Mažuika compares several fin models and bends their blades, with diagrams of how the blade bends and the water flows shown in between.

How to glue in a dry suit zipper

Virginijus Mažuika shows a dry suit, a new zipper, glue and a wooden board for the zipper. The old zipper is measured and cut out, the board is placed inside the suit and the area is clamped. The glue is mixed and brushed on, the zipper is laid in and pressed, and the seam is covered with a strip and pressed with a roller. At the end the new zipper is opened and closed.

How to deploy an SMB underwater

Keeping neutral buoyancy, the diver takes out a red SMB, unrolls it, secures the double ender and takes the SMB inflator and the spool into his right hand. The text on screen warns: no line in the water, and keep the left hand ready to adjust buoyancy. He then inflates the SMB and releases it, holds the spool with the line running to the surface and fixes the spool with the double ender.

The weakest point of a diving mask

In the shop Virginijus Mažuika shows several modern diving masks, stretches their straps and shows close up where the strap buckles attach to the mask frame.

Seam repair: sewing with a hand sewing awl

Virginijus Mažuika shows some BCDs and two hand sewing awls. On the table he fits a needle into the awl, threads it from the spool and sews a piece of black material stitch by stitch, then ties off the thread and shows the seam.

A dive light and a power bank

Virginijus Mažuika shows a dive light head, battery cells, power banks and a battery pack made of several cells.

SMB: spool, double ender and packing

Virginijus Mažuika shows various SMBs and spools in the shop, with shots of an SMB at the surface and underwater. Close up, he attaches a double ender to a finger spool and stows the line end, unrolls an SMB and shows its valves, then rolls it up from the far end and secures it with the spool and the double ender into a compact bundle.

How to attach a bolt snap to a diving cylinder

Virginijus Mažuika shows bolt snaps fixed to cylinders with cord loops and with cam bands. He then measures around the cylinder, bends a stainless steel band, cuts a piece of black tube, fits it over the band with the bolt snap and treats it with a heat gun. Finally the band is fitted on the cylinder and tightened with a wrench, and the result is compared with ordinary cam bands.

Diving bolt snaps: the types

Virginijus Mažuika lays out many different bolt snaps on a table – different sizes, swivel snaps and double enders – compares them, opens and closes them, and at the end shows the snaps on a small cylinder with a regulator.

How to choose a snorkel

In the shop Virginijus Mažuika shows several snorkels, among them one with a flexible section and a foldable one, points out their parts with a stick and puts them on together with a mask.

How to prepare new diving cylinders

Virginijus Mažuika unpacks new small cylinders and shows the markings on their shoulder close up. With a torch he inspects the inside of the cylinder and the thread, screws in the valve and tightens it with a spanner, then connects a filling hose and fills the cylinder, watching the gauge. At the end a diver with the cylinders is shown in a pool.

The diving dry suit

At the Divemen premises Virginijus Mažuika shows dry suits on the rack, boots and wrist rings. Wearing a suit, he shows the chest valve, the wrist rings and the diagonal front zipper, and at the end a red suit.

How to replace dry suit seals

The surfaces are sanded, the glue is mixed and applied, and the seal is pressed onto the sleeve. Later another seal, which looks like neoprene, is glued in the same way.

Removing and replacing diving equipment in midwater

In midwater, without touching the bottom, a diver takes off his BCD with the cylinder, holds it in front of him, turns over and puts it back on and fastens it. The equipment listed on screen: a BCD with integrated weights, a 7 mm wet suit, a 12 l steel cylinder, no weight belt.

How to fit KUBI dry gloves

Virginijus Mažuika shows dry gloves with rings, the rings and new latex seals. The ends of the dry suit latex wrist seals are cut off, rings are fitted into the sleeves, red latex seals are fitted onto smaller rings and set into the sleeve rings, and then the gloves are connected. At the end a diver wearing dry gloves is shown in a lake.

KUBI dry gloves on the existing wrist seal

Virginijus Mažuika shows dry gloves, rings and thin O-rings. This time the rings go on over the existing latex wrist seals: the seal is pulled over the ring, the sleeve end is folded over it, thin O-rings are added, and at the end a glove is connected to the sleeve.

How to shorten a diving equipment hose

Virginijus Mažuika shows hoses of different lengths with metal fittings. The fitting is clamped in a vice and unscrewed with a spanner, the hose is pulled out and the fitting is taken apart.
